Excess / Support

An artist book project published by MER Books, Belgium in 2024

‘Excess/Support’, presents a body of 100 paintings worked through from 2019 to 2023. From the onset, this broad network of paintings has been conceived and developed for the format of publication. The pages of this volume converge painterly experiments, the recreation and renovation of prior concepts, and prototypes for exhibitions to come.

The book experiments with placing the cyclical temporalities of painting throughout the horizontal spaces of a book. The pages draw individual images into functioning as notations, phrases or reports, whilst the dense consistencies of this volume emphasize painting as an openly non-verbal form of inscription.

The book could be considered as a practical means to ‘reading’ the installation projects that make up Sean’s painting practice (both past and future), or in a more general sense, a toolbox for manually thinking through notions of process, production, function and ‘enoughness’.

The manuscript of 100 paintings was exhibited at Harlan Levey Projects in mid 2024
