Klossowski’s ‘Nietzche et le cercle vicieux’ (2018) and ‘La Monnaie vivante’ (2025). The works were produced within the frameworks of two residency programmes - the Cité de la Litterature de la Ville de Paris at le Couvent des Récollets (Paris 2018), and at La Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris 2025.Please see below for images of the following public presentations of these drawings: &nbsp;-&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Life Drawings, from the manuscripts of Pierre Klossowski’s ‘Nietzche et le cercle vicieux’, &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; presented in&nbsp;‘Fronts(a)(b)(c)’, Winona, Brussels 2025&nbsp; &nbsp;- &nbsp; &nbsp; ‘Affaires suspendues’ at la Cité internationale des Arts, Paris 2025 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Presenting Life Drawings from the manuscripts of Pierre Klossowski’s ‘La monnaie vivante’ This project began&nbsp;during archive research in Paris, whilst consulting manuscripts housed at La Bibliothèque Litteraire Jacques Doucet. With photographic reproduction restricted and equipment constrained to pencil and paper, the visits gradually followed theses cues from exploratory reading and note taking into the application of academic drawing techniques during the archive consultation sessions. The works apply technical procedures employed in academic figure drawing (such as compositional structure and modelling, the measurement and modulation of negative and positive space) as a means to create highly precise observational drawings that could be described as hand-made facsimiles. These images were made during punctual sessions of observational drawing, focusing upon specific unpublished pages from the manuscripts of Pierre Klossowski’s ‘Nietzche et le cercle Vicieux’ and ‘La monnaie vivante’. Some pages were chosen due to the spatial qualities of a specific mise en page, others due to their material demonstration of writing as a generative procedure. The contents of the selected vignettes and drafted texts canvas a range of notions and concepts that feedback into the reasoning and process that lead to the drawings themselves - Inversion and invention, the double, mimicry, intentionality, alienation and wasteful experimentation, amongst others. The drawings simultaneously reinforce and undermine the phantasms that preoccupy Klossowski’s work, they perhaps simply make contact with his work outside of any singular form of authorship. &nbsp; Support An artist book project published by MER Books, Belgium in 2024 Click here for publisher page and purchase at Borgerhof-Lamberigts ‘Excess/Support’, presents a body of 100 paintings worked through from 2019 to 2023. From the onset, this broad network of paintings has been conceived and developed for the format of publication. The pages of this volume converge painterly experiments, the recreation and renovation of prior concepts, and prototypes for exhibitions to come. The book experiments with placing the cyclical temporalities of painting throughout the horizontal spaces of a book. The pages draw individual images into functioning as notations, phrases or reports, whilst the dense consistencies of this volume emphasize painting as an openly non-verbal form of inscription. The book could be considered as a practical means to ‘reading’ the installation projects that make up Sean’s painting practice (both past and future), or in a more general sense, a toolbox for manually thinking through notions of process, production, function and ‘enoughness’. Crossley https://seancrossley.com/Liquidity-web Liquidities This installation of paintings was produced recently in response to the economic activities and history of the region of Bordeaux, upon the occasion of the&nbsp;BAD+ residency program following an invitation by artistic director and curator Marie Maertens. The works directly connect the liquid nature of paint to the commercial influence of the river Garonne, viticulture, oyster production, and the productive economic forces of water beyond this context. This exhibition is the first stage of an ongoing research into the relationships between paint and economic models, transitions between states of matter (fluid, solid, vapor) and the conceptual development of liquidation as a process of transfer between ‘becoming abstract’ and ‘becoming real’. The project produced three discrete series (Impostes + Glaces + Verres) to envolop and recontextualise other paintings that were drawn to a conclusion within this framework of liquidities. <img Suisse 14 November 2024 – 30 January 2025 Idiosyncrasy (def: A mode of behavior or way of thought peculiar to an individual.) Synchronic (def: Occurring or existing at the same time or having the same period or phase.) Dr. Elenor Morgenroth and Sean Crossley met each other in 2021 through the Arts and Sciences exchange program, a collaboration between with Embassy of Foreign Artists, Flux Laboratory and Campus Biotech and the&nbsp; MIP:LAB EPFL. The social and conceptual basis for Idiosynchronic developed throughout a 3-month residency, where Elenor and Sean met daily to discuss each other’s work and share perspectives without any prescribed expectations or outcomes.Considering the ‘common space’ that this residency afforded, the experience or possibility of collaboration seemed to emerge as the subject for a project in itself. Being wary of appropriating each other’s work, our discussions gradually exposed coincidences or correlations between our respective disciplines, that we navigated with a mutual curiosity or incomprehension. These exchanges required us to regularly compare and define our vocabularies, or introduce and explain specific methods or references. One evening, Elenor asked Sean what he thought made a good work of art. Sean said he appreciated an idiosyncratic approach to art making, to which Elenor asked what he meant by idiosyncratic? Sean explained that if art was understood as some kind of game, and an artwork proposes a new set of rules or ways to play this game, the most surprising contributions regularly come from artists that have developed an unpredictable methodology. “Where does this come from?” being the standard reaction – an anomaly. Elenor said that she was surprised that Sean used the term, as the word Idiosyncratic has a more negative connotation in the scientific community. She explained that in science it is considered good practice to build on and reference the pool of knowledge accumulated by the scientific community. The production of idiosyncratic, ‘anomalous’ work runs a high risk of diverting and misleading the research of other scientists, essentially wasting collective time and resources. The visual material that constitutes this project gradually developed itself following the residency, as Sean and Elenor remained in close contact and continued to work on their mutual experiments at a distance. This series of conference poster paintings brings our thinking as close together as possible without talking ‘about’ each other’s work. Neither Elenor nor Sean can discuss these works in their entirety. They are built through a negotiation of gaps and distances, or a kind of equilibrium between duplicity and fidelity. Sean feels that the works feel like the repulsion that one feels and observes when trying to push two similar magnetic poles to touch, which Elenor understands better considering most of her experiments are conducted using functional magnetic resonance imagery. Consistencies presents two works that propose alternative painterly notions of consistency/coherency in relation to (self) expression, commerce, creativity and consumption. The first room houses Cereal Space, a panorama of decorative panels depicting a segmented view of a microscopic grain of wheat. This abstract image of agricultural genesis is used to unfold the domestic, civic and (micro)cosmic consistencies of painterly space simultaneously. Meanwhile, 30 paintings of edible and toxic flowers, each painted in lead and iron pigments within a single day, are installed in the next room. The installation - dubiously titled Quotidean Pain - reframes the innocuous motif of flowers within 2 steel baker trolleys, serving up a calendar month of industrial production and consistencies of painterly time, du pain quotidien. 15 September -&nbsp; 3 October 2021 ‘Rénovation de la Bourse’ focused upon the specific event of the renovation of a metro stop in central Brussels. Paintings of the subterranean, embodied spaces of the metro are countered by 1:1 trompe l’oeil paintings of barrières de chantiers used throughout the streets of Brussels. The installation physically circulated the viewer through a set of visual obstructions and immersions. These localised references extends themselves into broader painterly concepts such as how abstraction and realism, or urban infrastructure and bodies, compose each other in reciprocity. Brussels&nbsp; - 6 June - 7 July 2019 “Recreational Painting” was a set of paintings variously exploring depictions of a ‘leisure complex’. The show focused on the re-creation of imagery to think through notions of novelty, anachronism and painting’s ambiguous relationship with ‘free time’, a notion that we internalise with increasing complexity. The basis for the works emerged from research in Paris at les fonds Jules Maciet, Bibliothèque du Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the manuscripts of Pierre Klossowski at la Bibliothèque Littéraire Jacques Doucet.
