reliable surface »&nbsp; Miriam Stoney Liberalism presents a series of 8 large square format paintings that explore the coincidence of the political ideology of Liberalism and contemporary painting. Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based in the beliefs of liberty, individual autonomy, progress, pluralism and privacy – it is global in scope. The project of ‘contemporary painting’ historically emerged in parallel to the development of Liberalism, initially in Europe in the 19th century, explicitly through American abstraction in the mid 20th century, then exponentially alongside free market globalism in the late 20th century. Whilst the crisis in centrist politics is widely understood as a consequence of the contradictions engendered by Liberalism at a global scale, a crisis within contemporary painting is less exposed. For Liberalism to facilitate itself at a global scale it needs to abstract individuals into interchangeable units through a broad process of flattening out cultural differences. Contemporary art has followed a similar course through an expansive process of ‘abstraction’ that strives to encompass and integrate global artistic production into a cosmopolitan cycle of discourse. Through the advent of social media and the principles of individualism that both conceived and drive it, painting has become a placeholder for the fantasies of self-expression, autonomy and authenticity that feed these affective flows. Painting has become content, and a lot of painting is content with itself as a demonstration of this kind of liberal individualism, whereas historically the medium functioned as a practical, secular exercise in reconfiguring one’s perspective – of learning how to look. Both of these understandings of painting are inherently liberal, and together they are suggestive of the kinds of dynamic contradictions embedded within the projects of liberalism and contemporary painting. Painting’s flow through other media has perhaps ironically led to a clear reflection of its own medium specificity, its subject par excellence, as Liberalism. These paintings follow a formal procedure via a series of 2 x 2 meter canvases, approximate of the traditional scale of ‘Abstract painting’. The square permits a constant format when rotated, both physically and conceptually, as Liberal political party logos are painted across each of the 4 orientations of the canvases, proceeding from a strict protocol into impartial ‘free-hand’ improvisations. The choice of parties is simultaneously researched and arbitrary – an effort has been made to group parties from different global regions that share no direct political correlation, with each group spanning poisitions across the left-right political spectrum. Simultaneously, the groups are selected purely in terms of their visual coalescence – they must look good together. The paintings are rotated throughout their making, bringing the images into compression, negotiation and con-fusion. They are always hanging the right way up.&nbsp; The generally understood problem of the square format amongst painters is that you find yourself composing around the center, you become creatively or compositionally constrained if you will. This crisis at ‘the center’ of both the paintings and contemporary liberal politics gives a charge to the decisions and events occurring throughout each painting - creative colours, blurred edges, ambiguous overlaps, entangled information and whited-out spaces become open visual analogies as the paintings perform their own liberal subjectivity. The conventional goal of the ‘resolved painting’ begins to feel ludicrous or at least unlikely, with the works seemingly stuck between a series of satirical exercises and sessions of earnest self analysis. The works invest themselves in an interrogation of ‘painting about painting’ and ‘politics about politics’ as cyclical and irresolute processes in relation to each other. This experiment is testing ways in which one allegedly exhausted form of mediation can reinvigorate the other, and how the coincidence of their shared crises and internal contradictions could create présente une série de huit peintures de grand format carré qui explorent la convergence fortuite pouvant survenir entre l’idéologie politique du libéralisme et la peinture contemporaine. Le libéralisme est une philosophie politique et morale fondée sur les principes de liberté, d’autonomie individuelle, de progrès, de pluralisme et de respect de la vie privée, d’une portée mondiale. Le concept de la « peinture contemporaine » a historiquement émergé parallèlement au développement du libéralisme, d’abord en Europe au XIXe siècle, puis de manière explicite à travers l’abstraction américaine au milieu du XXe siècle, avant de connaître une diffusion exponentielle et parallèle à celle du libre marché mondialisé à la fin du XXe siècle. Si la crise de la politique centriste est largement comprise comme une conséquence des contradictions engendrées par le libéralisme à l’échelle mondiale, celle qui traverse la peinture contemporaine est moins manifeste. Pour se déployer à l’échelle mondiale, le libéralisme doit abstraire les individus en unités interchangeables, au moyen d’un vaste processus d’aplanissement des différences culturelles. L’art contemporain a suivi une trajectoire similaire, à travers un processus d’« abstraction » toujours plus vaste, qui cherche à englober et à intégrer la production artistique mondiale dans un cycle cosmopolite de discours. Avec l’avènement des réseaux sociaux et des principes d’individualisme qui ont à la fois présidé à leur conception et continuent de les animer, la peinture est devenue le réceptacle des fantasmes d’expression de soi, d’autonomie et d’authenticité qui alimentent ces flux affectifs. La peinture est devenue du contenu, et une grande partie de la peinture se contente d’elle-même en tant que manifestation de cette forme d’individualisme libéral, alors qu’historiquement, le médium fonctionnait comme un exercice pratique et séculier de reconfiguration de son propre point de vue — une manière d’apprendre à regarder. Ces deux conceptions de la peinture sont intrinsèquement libérales et, prises ensemble, donnent à voir les contradictions dynamiques inscrites au cœur des projets du libéralisme et de la peinture contemporaine. La circulation de la peinture à travers d’autres médias a peut-être, ironiquement, conduit à une réflexion particulièrement claire sur la spécificité de son propre médium, révélant le libéralisme comme son sujet par excellence. Ces peintures obéissent à une procédure formelle déployée sur une série de toiles de 2 × 2 mètres, correspondant approximativement à l’échelle traditionnelle de la « peinture abstraite ». Le carré permet de conserver un format constant lorsqu’il est soumis à une rotation, tant physiquement que conceptuellement : les logos de partis politiques libéraux sont peints selon chacune des quatre orientations de la toile, passant d’un protocole strict à des improvisations « à main levée » sans parti pris. Le choix des partis est à la fois documenté et arbitraire : il s’agit de regrouper des partis issus de différentes régions du monde, sans corrélation politique directe entre eux, chaque groupe couvrant diverses positions sur le spectre politique gauche-droite. Dans le même temps, ces groupes sont sélectionnés uniquement en fonction de leur cohérence visuelle — ils doivent bien fonctionner ensemble. Les peintures sont tournées tout au long de leur réalisation, entraînant les images dans des processus de compression, de négociation et de con-fusion. Elles sont ainsi toujours accrochées dans le bon sens. Le problème généralement associé au format carré chez les peintres tient à ce qu’il conduit à composer autour du centre : on se retrouve, pour ainsi dire, contraint sur le plan créatif ou compositionnel. Cette crise du « centre », commune aux peintures et à la politique libérale contemporaine, confère une tension particulière aux décisions et aux événements qui traversent chaque tableau : couleurs créatrices, contours flous, superpositions ambiguës, informations enchevêtrées et espaces recouverts de blanc deviennent autant d’analogies visuelles ouvertes, tandis que les peintures mettent en scène leur propre subjectivité libérale. L’objectif conventionnel d’une peinture « résolue » commence alors à paraître absurde, ou du moins improbable, les œuvres semblant rester suspendues entre une série d’exercices satiriques et des séances d’auto-analyse sincère. Elles s’engagent dans une interrogation de la « peinture sur la peinture » et de la « politique sur la politique », envisagées l’une par rapport à l’autre comme des processus cycliques et irrésolus. Cette expérimentation cherche à éprouver la manière dont une forme de médiation supposément épuisée pourrait revigorer l’autre, et dont la coïncidence de leurs crises et de leurs contradictions internes pourrait offrir les conditions nécessaires pour porter sur chacune d’elles un regard nouveau. With photographic reproduction restricted and equipment constrained to pencil and paper, the visits gradually followed theses cues from exploratory reading and note taking into the application of academic drawing techniques during the archive consultation sessions. The works apply technical procedures employed in academic figure drawing (such as compositional structure and modelling, the measurement and modulation of negative and positive space) as a means to create highly precise observational drawings that could be described as hand-made facsimiles. These images were made during punctual sessions of observational drawing, focusing upon specific unpublished pages from the manuscripts of Pierre Klossowski’s ‘Nietzche et le cercle Vicieux’ and ‘La monnaie vivante’. Some pages were chosen due to the spatial qualities of a specific mise en page, others due to their material demonstration of writing as a generative procedure. The contents of the selected vignettes and drafted texts canvas a range of notions and concepts that feedback into the reasoning and process that lead to the drawings themselves - Inversion and invention, the double, mimicry, intentionality, alienation and wasteful experimentation, amongst others. The drawings simultaneously reinforce and undermine the phantasms that preoccupy Klossowski’s work, they perhaps simply make contact with his work outside of any singular form of authorship. &nbsp; Support An artist book project published by MER Books, Belgium in 2024 Click here for publisher page and purchase at Borgerhof-Lamberigts ‘Excess/Support’, presents a body of 100 paintings worked through from 2019 to 2023. From the onset, this broad network of paintings has been conceived and developed for the format of publication. The pages of this volume converge painterly experiments, the recreation and renovation of prior concepts, and prototypes for exhibitions to come. The book experiments with placing the cyclical temporalities of painting throughout the horizontal spaces of a book. The pages draw individual images into functioning as notations, phrases or reports, whilst the dense consistencies of this volume emphasize painting as an openly non-verbal form of inscription. The book could be considered as a practical means to ‘reading’ the installation projects that make up Sean’s painting practice (both past and future), or in a more general sense, a toolbox for manually thinking through notions of process, production, function and ‘enoughness’. Crossley https://seancrossley.com/Liquidity-web Liquidities This installation of paintings was produced recently in response to the economic activities and history of the region of Bordeaux, upon the occasion of the&nbsp;BAD+ residency program following an invitation by artistic director and curator Marie Maertens. The works directly connect the liquid nature of paint to the commercial influence of the river Garonne, viticulture, oyster production, and the productive economic forces of water beyond this context. This exhibition is the first stage of an ongoing research into the relationships between paint and economic models, transitions between states of matter (fluid, solid, vapor) and the conceptual development of liquidation as a process of transfer between ‘becoming abstract’ and ‘becoming real’. The project produced three discrete series (Impostes + Glaces + Verres) to envolop and recontextualise other paintings that were drawn to a conclusion within this framework of liquidities. <img Suisse 14 November 2024 – 30 January 2025 Idiosyncrasy (def: A mode of behavior or way of thought peculiar to an individual.) Synchronic (def: Occurring or existing at the same time or having the same period or phase.) Dr. Elenor Morgenroth and Sean Crossley met each other in 2021 through the Arts and Sciences exchange program, a collaboration between with Embassy of Foreign Artists, Flux Laboratory and Campus Biotech and the&nbsp; MIP:LAB EPFL. The social and conceptual basis for Idiosynchronic developed throughout a 3-month residency, where Elenor and Sean met daily to discuss each other’s work and share perspectives without any prescribed expectations or outcomes.Considering the ‘common space’ that this residency afforded, the experience or possibility of collaboration seemed to emerge as the subject for a project in itself. Being wary of appropriating each other’s work, our discussions gradually exposed coincidences or correlations between our respective disciplines, that we navigated with a mutual curiosity or incomprehension. These exchanges required us to regularly compare and define our vocabularies, or introduce and explain specific methods or references. One evening, Elenor asked Sean what he thought made a good work of art. Sean said he appreciated an idiosyncratic approach to art making, to which Elenor asked what he meant by idiosyncratic? Sean explained that if art was understood as some kind of game, and an artwork proposes a new set of rules or ways to play this game, the most surprising contributions regularly come from artists that have developed an unpredictable methodology. “Where does this come from?” being the standard reaction – an anomaly. Elenor said that she was surprised that Sean used the term, as the word Idiosyncratic has a more negative connotation in the scientific community. She explained that in science it is considered good practice to build on and reference the pool of knowledge accumulated by the scientific community. The production of idiosyncratic, ‘anomalous’ work runs a high risk of diverting and misleading the research of other scientists, essentially wasting collective time and resources. The visual material that constitutes this project gradually developed itself following the residency, as Sean and Elenor remained in close contact and continued to work on their mutual experiments at a distance. This series of conference poster paintings brings our thinking as close together as possible without talking ‘about’ each other’s work. Neither Elenor nor Sean can discuss these works in their entirety. They are built through a negotiation of gaps and distances, or a kind of equilibrium between duplicity and fidelity. Sean feels that the works feel like the repulsion that one feels and observes when trying to push two similar magnetic poles to touch, which Elenor understands better considering most of her experiments are conducted using functional magnetic resonance imagery. This abstract image of agricultural genesis is used to unfold the domestic, civic and (micro)cosmic consistencies of painterly space simultaneously. Meanwhile, 30 paintings of edible and toxic flowers, each painted in lead and iron pigments within a single day, are installed in the next room. The installation - dubiously titled Quotidean Pain - reframes the innocuous motif of flowers within 2 steel baker trolleys, serving up a calendar month of industrial production and consistencies of painterly time, du pain quotidien.
